Hyderabad Water Board to lay new pipes in slums

The entire water supply network in Vaddera Basti in Madhapur, which was laid decades ago and is now being revamped by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), three days after 70 residents of the district were hospitalised after they complained of acute diarrhoea allegedly due to water contamination.

On Sunday morning, the investigation team headed by the HMWS&SB’s managing director M Dana Kishore visited the slum and inspected the water distribution network. The investigation team determined that all individual service connections must be replaced. There are existing tap connections near lavatories and sewer chambers, the team noticed.

A majority of the connections around here do not have bibcocks. This house is causing pollution by using its own service pipe to dispose of used water and wastewater,” said a senior HMWS&SB official. The water board has determined, however, that all service connections have bibcocks installed.

In an interview with TOI, Dana Kishore stated, “During our two-hour visit to the locality, it was observed that the existing water supply lines were old and were laid by the then municipality. This has led all of these old distribution mains to be replaced. Until those pipelines can be replaced in the slum, the water board will supply residents with water through tankers.
