Power outage in Narsipatnam government, baby delivered with cell phone lights

A power cut forced the Narsipatnam Area Hospital to deliver a baby using candles, cell phones, and battery lights. Social media videos showing the infant suffering due to a power outage drew sharp criticism from the local residents.

Locals report severe power outages ranging from seven to ten hours a day over the past week. Because of some technical snag, the hospital’s generator and inverter in the labor room didn’t work on Wednesday, affecting patients in the hospital.

“As a result, we had to rely on candles, cell phone torches, and charging lights to perform the delivery. According to the hospital’s in-charge superintendent Dr. David Vasanth Kumar, the delivery was normal.
