“Is the IPL more important than playing for India?”- Rohit Sharma faces backlash

Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma participation in the qualifying match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday has raised eyebrows as he was deemed physically unfit to play in the Australian tour but did play in an IPL match.

First in line to raise the issue was the former captain of the Indian cricket team, DilipVengsarkar. He questioned the batsman’s participation in the game despite his injury because of which he was previously picked out from the team to be playing against Australia in the tour scheduled for later this month.

Mr. Dilip’s stance contained the decision of the cricketer and the BCCI to allow Rohit Sharma to play in the IPL but not the international match. He asked whether the 20-20 test series in India was more important than the matches being held abroad to play for the homeland.

“Now, the question here is, is the IPL more important to him than playing for India? Is the club more important than playing for the nation for him? Will the BCCI take a call on this? Or is it that the BCCI physio faltered in diagnosing Rohit’s injury correctly,” Mr. Dilip said.

Following a hamstring injury in his thigh, Rohit Sharma was not made a part of the team taking Australia head-on in the tour called Down Under. He got hurt during a match in IPL 2020.

Despite the names being called on quite recently and his not being included because of his injury, he still went on to play the last match before the playoffs. This gave rise to many questioning the management’s choice to keep Rohit Sharma out of the tour even though he played a match in the IPL post his hurt.

His batting game against Sunrisers Hyderabad dints last long as he walked back to join the rest of his team again after making 4 runs in 7 balls. He also missed out on a couple of matches before playing at Sharjah.

India’s tour of Australia is scheduled to begin on November 27th. The players will be arriving on the continent 15 days early to go through covid-protocols and charge up for the matches.

The tour was made possible after Melbourne was untied from the chains of lockdown induced due to the pandemic.

The tour includes 3 one-day test matches, 3 Twenty-20s, and three Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series. There will also be a day-night match at the Adelaide Oval between both the teams who have never lost their day-night games. However, the dates have been told to be flexible as any government restriction or catastrophe related to the deadly infection might come up at any time.
