Israel resumes bombing Gaza after 24 Palestinians die in air strikes

Israeli forces have resumed bombing Gaza on Tuesday morning after it created havoc in the third holiest site of Muslims.

The incident comes hours following the overnight airstrikes by Israel that killed at least 24 Palestinians, 9 of whom were children, according to the health ministry of Gaza. Hamas had earlier launched rockets towards Israel from the coastal territory.

These strikes were after Hamas, Gaza’s rulers, gave an ultimatum to Israel, demanding them to stand down its security forces from the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound situated in occupied East Jerusalem.

On Monday, Israeli police stomped down in the mosque compound for the third day in a row firing rubber-coated steel rounds, tear gas and stun grenades towards the Palestinian worshippers offering their night prayers during the last days of Muslims’ holy month Ramadan.

The violence led to over 700 Palestinians getting injured within 24 hours in occupied West bank and Jerusalem. It continued till Tuesday morning while targeting specific areas of Khan Younis, Al-Zaitoun neighbourhood and Al-Bureji refugee camp.

In a separate incident, an Israeli warplane’s attack on a house in Al-Shati’s refugee camp left at least 3 civilians dead. One amongst the three was a woman while another was a disabled man, according to Raed al-Dahshan, a spokesman for the civil defense in Gaza.

Most of the children amongst the 24 that died in the violence were of the same extended family. Two of them were siblings- 11-year-old Ibrahim and seven-year-old Marwan, the only children of Yousef al-Masri. Just before Iftar, the children were playing outside their home in Beit Hanoun when two bombs exploded on the street and killed them instantly.

Hamas had earlier launched many rockets towards Israel after its ultimatum issued to the country expired. These included a barrage that led to the setoff of many air raid sirens as far as Jerusalem following Israeli soldier’s attacks on the Al Aqsa Mosque compound. Videos and images of trees and other entities set on fire were posted on social media.

The situated has got more intense due to the Israelis forcefully expelling many Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

Despite the attacks and absurd demands to Palestinians to leave their rightful homes, the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu warned Hamas of an open-ended operation against it. Accusing the group of crossing a so-called “red line” with its recent attacks, Netanyahu said, “Whoever attacks us will pay a heavy price.”

As for his countrymen, a civilian from the southern region of Israel was mildly injured after a vehicle was hit by anti-tank missile from Gaza, according to the army.

Threatening Israel of more attacks and rocket launches if the Israeli troops come back to Al Aqsa compound or go forward with their planned forced expulsions of Palestine families living in East Jerusalem neighbourhood, Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas’s military wing, called the recent attack Israeli “crimes and aggression” in the city. “This is a message the enemy has to understand well,” he added.
