It took him 24 years to demonstrate his innocence

It took three months in prison and 24 years of a court battle for a man in Uttar Pradesh to prove that he is innocent.

Ram Ratan, now of the age 65, has at long last been vindicated by a local court in Muzaffarnagar because police neglected to deliver any proof against him.

24 years prior, he was reserved for having an illegal gun and furthermore served three months in prison.

His family asserted the charges against him were false and he was reserved because of an electoral enmity during panchayat surveys.

“Ram Ratan had to be present in court on more than 500 dates during the past 24 years. He suffered a lot of mental and physical harassment, said his legal advisor Dharam Singh Gujjar.

Ram Ratan, a resident of Rohana Khurd town in Muzaffarnagar, was arrested in 1996 by a police group from the city Kotwali police headquarters that claimed to have recuperated a nation made a gun with two bullets from his ownership.

He was reserved under the Arms Act and sent to prison. In the wake of going through a quarter of a year in jail, he was allowed bail.

In 2006, the nearby court encircled charges against him and requested that police present proof and the recuperated weapon before it.

In the wake of sitting tight for a long time, the CJM court cleared Ram Ratan, seeing that it was “left with no other choice”.

“The court had been asking the prosecution to provide evidence and gave them enough time, but they failed to produce any evidence against my client. Because of the lack of evidence, the court acquitted him,” his attorney said.

Ram Ratan told correspondents, “I was 41 when they arrested and charged me. It seems like a really long time. I can finally heave a sigh of relief. But I do not know who will remunerate me for the years of torture and harassment.”
