Joe Biden Signs Executive Orders On International Women’s Day

Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States of America has recently signed two executive orders. The orders aim to promote gender equity across the nation.

Soon after signing the executive orders, Biden said that the orders aim to ensure that all the policies in the USA (both domestic and foreign) create a foundation that brings dignity and equity in women’s lives.

He acknowledged that just like other nations around the world, women in the US have also fought for justice, destroyed the barriers and built the country collectively. He said that the women have a huge contribution in building communities and helping communities throughout crises. And often women have been denied their basic rights like freedom and equal opportunity.

Biden further added that the contributions made by the women are often downplayed and their stories are neglected. Following this, International Women’s Day is a reminder for everyone to recommit themselves to bring equity and equality towards women across the world. It is everyone’s responsibility to hold the system accountable that creates gender disparities and underestimates women’s potential.

The President also noted that the coronavirus pandemic was an eye-opener for gender inequities in society. He said that women were the ones who were majorly hit by the economic crises in terms of losing their jobs. The pandemic forced millions of girls out of schools which would impact the growth of the nation for decades ahead. He further noted that domestic violence against women also increases during the pandemic-induced lockdown.

Executive Orders Explained

Reports suggest that the first executive order established changes within the White House. It aims to set a Gender Policy Council in place. This will reformulate the White House Council on Women and Girls which was disbanded by the previous president Donald Trump.

The council will work with the cabinet secretaries across the state which will send an annual report to the President. The report will hold data regarding the progress in bettering gender equality across the government bodies.

The second executive order aims to reverse a regulation that was reportedly controversial for the Trump administration. The regulation reportedly gave more rights and protections towards the ones accused of sexual assault or harassment.

The order directs the Education Department to check over the current regulations and make changes which guarantees  “an educational environment free from discrimination on the basis of sex, including discrimination in the form of sexual harassment, which encompasses sexual violence, and including discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity”.
