Karachi Reports the Highest Rainfall in a Day, 19 Casualties

On the 28th of August, at least 19 individuals were killed in different downpour related occurrences in Karachi, as the Pakistani city recorded its Highest Rainfall in a day since 1967, authorities said.

As reported by Dawn news, the Met division said Karachi got 223.5 mm of rainfall in the span of 12 hours on Thursday solely, the most amount of rain ever recorded in just a single day in Pakistan.

The last 24-hour record was recorded at the Masroor base on the 26th of July, 1967. Where the place endured 211.3 mm of a downpour.

As the officials said, rain-fall in the month of August has broken the 89-year-old records for the city.

The emergency like circumstance drove Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah to declare a public holiday on Saturday.

Emergency response teams were deployed by the Navy in the help of the city administration in different territories that were equipped with boats and other life-saving gear.

During the process, the navy groups saved 55 individuals caught in the flooded regions of Malir and Korangi Crossing, while 20 families abandoned in Sammoo Goth were additionally relocated to a sheltered area.

In the meantime, as per Dawn news, several main streets in the city saw serious traffic jams and a few zones of Karachi experienced power blackouts.

Some badly affected areas of the city lost power for the better part of a day.

As a precautionary measure, the power in the areas were cut for such a long period of time, said by Karachi Electric’s spokesperson.

In response to the unpredicted storm spell in Karachi, Prime Minister Imran Khan said that his government would “not abandon” the city’s people “in their time of emergency”.

In a string of tweets, the premier said that the central government was “completely cognisant” of the destruction caused by the rainstorm, continuing: “I am personally monitoring the relief and rescue operations, and am in constant contact with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) chairman and Sindh Governor for regular updates.”

Imran Ismail, the Singh Governor described the situation as “unusual and abnormal” in addition stating that “emergency response” was more than required.

Opposition PPP chief Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, in a tweet, mentioned that in this year, Sindh has seen the most noticeably awful rainstorm in 90 years.
