Karnataka’s lockdown fills the state with a spine-chilling silence.

Bengaluru: Karnataka state got turned into a ghost state on Sunday after the complete lockdown was implemented. Even as the policemen were posted in various parts of the state to keep a close watch, all the towns and cities were swept with an uneasy calm and Karnataka’s lockdown fills the state with a spine-chilling silence.

“A total lockdown is in force across the state since Saturday evening (7pm) to Monday morning (7am). A ban under Section 144 of the CrPC has also been imposed to prevent movement of people and vehicles,” a police official reported.

The state is under a partial relaxation on weekdays and lockdown on weekends, as announced by the state government to curb the spread of coronavirus. The partial relaxation started from May 19th to revive the economic situation of the state and restore the normal conditions of the cities.

“We have seized about 100 vehicles across the city (Bengaluru) since morning when some people, mostly youths, ventured out on two-wheelers to roam around in residential areas in violation of the lockdown norm,” the official said.

The authorities also sealed the inter-state borders to stop movement of people and automobiles from neighboring states, as bus services and transportation of goods remain suspended till Monday morning, in view of the lockdown.

“Only ambulances and vehicles on essential duty are allowed to ply during the curfew period. Shops selling medicines, groceries, vegetables, fruits and poultry and meat products have been allowed to open but ensure customers maintain physical distancing and stand in queues. Barring retail outlets for essential supplies like milk, vegetables, fruits, and medicines, everything has been shut down since 7pm on Saturday to 7am on Monday,” the official added.

Taxis, state buses and autos have also not been permitted to function anywhere in the state.

The Karnataka state government decided to impose the lockdown only on Sundays till the end of the month that is from May 24th to May 31st, although the central government has extended the lockdown across the nation from May 18th to May 31st, implementing relaxations in the regulations to restore the country’s normalcy.

All main roads, flyovers and enter/exit points on the city outskirts have been blocked to prevent vehicular movement.

Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa urged the people to follow the lockdown on this (May 24) and next Sunday (May 31) to contain the spread of the virus, in a plea to all citizens across the state on Saturday.

“We have reached a crucial stage in the war against Covid-19. Follow guidelines in the interest and welfare of all to fight the pandemic. Stay at home to be safe,” said Yediyurappa.

The state government, nevertheless, permitted weddings which were already fixed to be carried out on Sundays, amid the lockdown, though an array of officials were allotted to ensure health and social distancing.
