KTR encourages Australia to establish a consulate general office in Hyderabad

KT Rama Rao, the Minister of Information Technology and Industries, urged the Australian government to consider opening a Consulate General in Hyderabad. Hyderabad and Australia will be able to further strengthen their trade, educational, and travel relationships as a result of this move, he said.

Not just in India, but throughout the world, the US Consulate General in Hyderabad issued the greatest number of visas. The highest number of student visas are issued from Hyderabad to the US. Australia’s Consul General in Hyderabad would not be far behind the UK, Rama Rao said as he argued for Australia’s consulate in Hyderabad.

“Hyderabad is the best city in South India,” he added. In terms of rankings, Mercer has ranked Hyderabad the top city in India for years in a row, not just in South India, but the entire country,” he explained.

During a launch event organized by the Australian Consulate-General in Chennai for the ‘Update to an India Economic Strategy to 2035: Navigating from Potential to Delivery,’ Rama Rao suggested that Australia engages with States individually as well as New Delhi when investing in India.

For an Australian company entering India, the experience will vary depending on the gateway they choose. For instance, if they choose Hyderabad, their experience would be different compared to entering a State somewhere else in India. India is a union of States and each State has unique characteristics. States are responsible for land, water, power, and other infrastructure, as well as daily affairs. Telangana, by contrast, does not have a coastline like our sister state AP. The States will pitch according to their respective strengths, he said.

The international investor community’s apprehensions were taken into account when we launched our industrial policy, he added.

The TS-iPASS one-window clearance system has been used to handle 19,000 applications for investments worth about Rs 2.7 lakh crore that will create 16 lakh jobs directly. The majority of these investments are repeat investments, with 24 per cent being repeat investments.

There has been a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the State of Telangana and King’s College London to launch a Pharma University at Hyderabad Pharma City, which will be the world’s biggest pharma manufacturing cluster, spread across more than 19,000 acres.

Life sciences are Telangana’s focus area since the city makes a third of the world’s human vaccines, he said, adding that collaboration, staff and student exchanges, and curriculum development are part of the plan.

Australian companies can benefit from Hyderabad as a hub. A two-way interaction will be explored in a range of fields, he said, including startups, academia, education, and other fields.
