Monsoon store up trouble again for rain affected people in Jalpally

Since it is a matter of few days for the setting of monsoon this year, it rings a bell of fear for the residents of Osman Nagar and surrounding colonies in Jalpally municipality where inundation became a perennial issue during rainy seasons.

Most of the people in affected areas are now venting frustrations over non-completion of Nala work under Strategic Nala Development Project (SNDP) aimed at tackling the inundation issues that has been hunting the affected colonise ever since the year 2000 when the flood fury first created a havoc after incessant rains.

The Nala work was proposed to provide relief to the people of affected areas like Osman Nagar, Arafath Colony, Mariyam Colony, Mawazeer Colony, Amreen Colony, Nabil Colony etc under Jalpally municipality which are facing the issues of inundation during rainy season every ever.

Though the Nala works under Strategic Nala Development Project (SNDP) was planned from Kummarikunta to Gurram Cheruvu last year to drain out storm water from affected areas during the rainy seasons, a significant portion of the work is still pending. According to official statistics, a proposal to construct a Nala from Kummarikunta to Gurram Cheruvu was approved in the month of April 2021 with an estimated cost of Rs.10.66 crore under Phase-I. However, if the officials are to be believed, the works commenced in the month of March this year almost a year after sanctioning.

“Out of a total length of 2000 meters, merely 640 meters of works were taken up so far of which 280 meters of length were completed while excavation was done on another 360 meters. Still there is a gap of work with a length of 1360 meters need to be taken up, informed an SNDP official supervising the work.

While the works of the first phase is yet to be completed, another proposal of 900 meters work was made to SNDP Wing, GHMC in the month of March this year for sanctioning of the project under phase-II with an estimated cost of Rs.27.26 crores. However, this proposal is still pending with the GHMC.

When asked what if the rainy season sets into motion and the Phase-II work is still in the process of approval, the official said, “We are trying to complete whatever the task we have in hand within the next one month as we began the work only two months ago.”

Ridiculing the claim of the officials that the pending works will be completed in one month, Rashed Khan, a senior congress leader, questioned that, “How the SNDP officials can complete the remaining 70 percent work in one month of time when 30 percent of the work was not completed during the last one year? This is just eyewash. If the rainy season sets into motion, the people of the affected areas are left with no option but to run for shelter again.”
