Odisha Government Requests Centre for Second AIIMS

The Government of Odisha has requested the Centre for the establishment of the second AIIMS in the state.

Chief secretary Asit Tripathy has composed a letter to the Union Health Ministry for the establishment of the second All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Sundargarh locale as early as possible.

Tripathy educated that Odisha has a completely functional AIIMS in Bhubaneswar which has surfaced as one of the leading AIIMS in the nation in terms of medical education and quality health care.

Tripathy added: “We have learnt that a 2nd AIIMS has been established in Bihar and a similar proposal is under consideration in another state. Tripathy included: “In view of the health care requirements of Odisha, it is proposed that a second AIIMS may be considered for Western Odisha in the district of Sundargarh.”

There is already an accessible infrastructure for college and hospital in Sundargarh, he said.

As a CSR initiative, an MoU has been inked between the Government of Odisha and NTPC to set up a Medical College and Hospital. The construction of the project has been finished and the equipment acquisition process is going on, he said.

The hospital is intended for 500 beds and the college will have 100 seats in MBBS.

The chief secretary informed: “Therefore, this available infrastructure can be used for setting up of All India Institute of Medical Sciences within a short period of time. It will cater to a huge Tribal population in the region and help in providing quality tertiary care in the backward area of Western Odisha.”

The area is simply accessible through street, railroad and air (Jharsuguda airport).
