Osman Sagar Lake Crest Gates to Be Lifted Again Anytime

Following lifting the crest gates of Himayath Sagar earlier this week, the officials are now gearing up to pull up the gates of Osman Sagar that, if authorities are to be believed, may reach to its full capacity anytime.

While four gates of Himayath Sagar Lake were already opened to feed the Musi River, the storage capacity of Osman Sagar Lake was also reached to crest level putting officials on high alert again.

The present storage of Himayath Sagar Lake is hovering at 1762.00 feet (2.603 TMC) with four gates are already open to let loose the flood water into Musi River. While the lake is witnessing an inflow of 500 cusecs, the authorities have planned to release 1400 cusecs of water into Musi through lifting up the gates upto a foot.

At the same time, the Osman Sagar Lake is also witnessing good inflows from the last two days and the storage capacity has already reached 1788.55 feet (3.568 TMC) as against the full tank level of 1790 feet (3.90 TMC).

On 20th July the HMWS&SB authorities have lifted almost four gates of Himayath Sagar to feed the Musi River after the incessant rains formed heavy flows in upstream areas from where the flood flow swarm into the water body and pushed up the storage capacity to 1763.00 feet (2.773 TMC) as against the full capacity of 1763.50 feet (2.968 TMC).

However, two days later the authorities lifted two gates of Osman Sagar Lake too after 11 years of gap when the storage capacity reached to 1784.90 feet (2.817 TMC) as against the full tank capacity of 1790 feet 3.90 TMC).

Similarly, two gates of Himayath Sagar were lifted again upto one feet earlier this week on August 31 after the reservoir witnessed a heavy inflow from upstream areas. Now the authorities are again rolling up their sleeves to open the crest gates of Osman Sagar Lake where the storage capacity reached to 17.88.55 feet as against the full capacity of 1790 feet with just over 1.5 feet of gap left behind to replete the lake.

“We are sure of opening the gates of Osman Sagar Lake again anytime as the storage capacity has reached to the crest here as well due to consistent inflows from upstream areas. Going through the copious amount of rains, we already made up our minds and prepared to raise the curtain again at Osman Sagar as more rains have been predicted in the days to come that would surely bring more inflows into the Lake,” informed a lake official.
