Parliament To Cut Short Second Phase of Budget Session Amidst Assembly Polls

With the assembly polls beginning in four states and one union territory from March 27, the ongoing Budget Session of the Parliament is likely to be concluded soon this week.

Floor Leaders Request Early Conclusion Of Budget Session

As per the reports, many of the floor leaders from different political parties have requested that the session be concluded earlier because of the elections. The session was earlier scheduled to be continued till April 8. This comes after the Assembly elections are scheduled to be conducted between March 27 and April 29 in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

A source said that the second phase of the Budget session is likely to be cut short and may end by the last week of March. This comes after many political parties including Trinamool Congress requested for the same. Elections in West Bengal start from March 27.

Reports suggest that the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker and the Chairman of Rajya Sabha have reportedly received over 100 formal requests from parliamentarians to curtail the Budget session ahead of Assembly Elections.

The letters also include letters from Trinamool Floor Leaders in the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha.

The Assembly elections will be held over 294 seats in West Bengal in eight phases from March 27 to April 29. In Assam, the elections will be conducted over 126 seats in three phases from March 27 to April 6. Puducherry will have elections over 30 seats, Tamil Nadu for 234 seats and Kerala for 140 seats. The results will be announced on May 2.

First Budget Session Highlights

While presenting the First Budget Session for 2021-22, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the budget is based on six pillars; physical and financial capital, health and wellbeing, innovation and R&D, Minimum Government, Maximum Governance, Inclusive Development for aspirational India and Reinvigorating Human Capital.
