PhD Student Dies by Suicide After Alleged Harassment Over Loan

A 28-year-old PhD student working as a project assistant at a central research institute in Hyderabad allegedly died by suicide on  after facing harassment from a family over a loan taken by her father, police said.

The victim’s mother filed a complaint at Nacharam Police Station, stating that her husband had taken Rs 15 lakh from the family with the promise of securing a job for a woman member at the research institute.

The accused family members, who allegedly humiliated the student and filed a cheating case against her and her father, demanded Rs 35 lakh to withdraw the case and threatened to ruin their lives.

The student, feeling humiliated and depressed by the constant harassment, took her own life. In a purported selfie video, the deceased stated that while her father had taken the money, she was unaware of the transaction. She expressed distress over being held responsible for the loan and accused the family of harassment and filing a “fake FIR” against her.

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under provisions of abetment to suicide and the SC/ST Act and arrested three individuals, including two members of the family who allegedly harassed the student and her father.

The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the mental health and well-being of students facing financial and social pressures.
