Police Commissioner CV Anand meets with AIMIM delegation

A meeting of MLAs and MLCs from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen was held on Thursday, where they requested that business establishments be allowed to continue to operate until late into the night hours during the Ramzan month.

During Ramzan, a delegation led by AIMIM general secretary and Yakutpura MLA Ahmed Pasha Quadri informed the Commissioner that business establishments are often permitted to stay open until the wee hours of the next day.

Fasting people eat during the early hours of the morning, so hotels make themselves available to serve them. The commercial establishments in the markets also operate until late in the night to aid shoppers, Quadri said, adding that the Commissioner had assured him that markets would be allowed to run until the wee hours of the following day and that they would not be forced to close at midnight.

During Ramadan, elderly men wake up the rozadars in Hyderabad

Today, even though most people wake up with their mobile phones and digital clocks, several elderly men sing live naats (hymns) to wake up people for Sehri (the pre-dawn meal) during the Ramzan fast, a tradition that dates back decades.

In the past, the ‘Sehri-ke-fakeer’ (who calls for sehri) used to wake up people with drums for a pre-dawn meal, a practice that had great significance. During the holy month, this was used to perform the duty of earning rewards. Despite the decline of this tradition over time, people are now waking people up for sehri.

One can see elderly men calling for sehri at around 3 am pre-dawn in Hyderabad’s Purana sheher lane. Syed Muneer, a sexagenarian who has woken people up for sehri for the past three decades in Hussaini Alam and surrounding areas, explained: “This is to call Muslims towards the almighty and Prophet Mohammed. In Ramzan, I am doing his duty.”

Despite being blind, he is not a professional drummer. He only does this to earn rewards for good deeds. Muneer says earlier he used to wake people up without a mic or speaker, but after someone donated the digital speaker. With it, he calls for sehri while walking and chanting “Sehri karo utho, Ramzan Ke rozedaro sehri karo utho,” singing hymns and visiting Osman Bagh, Kamatipura, DoodhBowli, and Hussainialam areas at 2:30 am, he said.
