The planned visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Hyderabad has important significance for several political parties in the state as they prepare for the approaching assembly elections later this year. On June 15, Shah is slated to attend a public meeting in the Khammam Parliamentary constituency, while BJP President JP Nadda is also expected to visit Telangana. There are also reports that Shah may visit Hyderabad during his trip.
With the Telangana assembly elections coming, the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is looking for a third consecutive victory, while the BJP is determined to create a government in the state. The Indian National Congress (INC), buoyed by its recent triumph in Karnataka Assembly elections, is likewise attempting to expand its base. The party is also hoping to repeat its victory in Telangana’s assembly elections.
Telangana’s assembly elections are set to take place at the end of this year, with 119 constituency seats up for grabs. The BRS (formerly known as TRS) scored a major victory in the previous assembly elections, which were held nine months ahead of schedule, capturing 88 out of 119 seats, significantly expanding its seat share. The INC, on the other hand, had a minor decrease in seat share, while the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) won seven seats. The BJP suffered a loss, obtaining only one seat, compared to its previous five-seat majority.
The visit of Amit Shah and other notable politicians to Hyderabad suggests that political activities and preparations for the next assembly elections have escalated. Telangana’s political scene is set to see heated competition as parties vie for control in the state
