Rahul Gandhi tests positive for covid-19, isolating at home

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi updated his health condition today disclosing that he has tested positive for covid-19. He informed the news through a post on Twitter in which he mentioned that he has mild symptoms of the infection. He urged everyone who met him in the recent past to abide by all norms too.

“After experiencing mild symptoms, I’ve just tested positive for COVID. All those who’ve been in contact with me recently, please follow all safety protocols and stay safe,” the 50-year-old wrote.

According to the sources close to Mr Gandhi, he is isolating at home as per his doctor’s advice. Reportedly, he has not been in contact with Congress president and mother Sonia Gandhi as they dint meet each other since the past 12 days. As for his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, he hasn’t met her in the past 5 days, his associates said.

Wishing him good health was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who tweeted saying, “I pray for the good health and quick recovery of Lok Sabha MP Shri Rahul Gandhi.

Recently, another Congress leader and former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh also tested positive for covid-19. He was initially suffering from a high fever following which he was admitted to a hospital yesterday. Mr Singh’s positive report for covid came later. He has been administered 2 jabs of BioTech’s Covaxin. Sources say that the decision for his hospitalization was “a matter of precaution”.

Speaking about Mr Singh’s health status this morning, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said in a tweet, “Followed up on Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s health with the medical team attending to him at AIIMS, Delhi. His condition is stable. Best possible care is being provided to him. We all pray for his quick recovery.”

One of the many people who posted wishes for the top leader’s recovery was Rahul Gandhi. He had tweeted saying, “Dear Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, Wishing you a speedy recovery. India needs your guidance and advice in this difficult time.”

In a bid to stop any further spread seeing the high numbers of the infection in India, Mr Gandhi had cancelled all his rallies for the West Bengal elections on Sunday.

His Twitter post read, “In view of the COVID situation, I am suspending all my public rallies in West Bengal. I would advise all political leaders to think deeply about the consequences of holding large public rallies under the current circumstances.”

In what appeared to be a dig at the large crowds gathered for the West Bengal rallies, Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, which when translated roughly said, “One has seen such a crowd of the sick and the dead for the first time.”
