Recep Tayyip Erdogan Brings Up Kashmir at UN General Assembly

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is competing for the leadership of Islamic countries, raised the Kashmir issue once again at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday considering it a burning issue.

He censured the annulment of the special status of Kashmir a year ago saying that means taken after it further confounded the issue.

The Kashmir conflict which is also key to the stability and peace of South Asia is still a burning issue, he said. We are in favor of solving this issue through dialogue within the framework of the United Nations resolutions, especially in line with the expectations of the people of Kashmir, he included.

Weeks after India discarded Article 370 of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, Erdogan had brought up the issue of Kashmir at the UNGA 74th meeting and censured the international community for neglecting to focus on the Kashmir strife.

This year, following Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, brought up the Kashmir issue, Erdogan also censured the circumstance in Kashmir

The prime Security Council directive on Kashmir, Resolution 47, called for Pakistan to withdraw its soldiers and workforce from the district as the initial step and a pre-condition for a referendum.

Islamabad has dismissed it and proceeded with its occupation enabling India to settle the issue through elections in Kashmir.

India believes the Kashmir conflict as something to be settled bilaterally with Pakistan, and under the Simla Agreement.

It is a place that is broadly acknowledged by the international community, including ultimately by US President Donald Trump who had attempted and couldn’t be successful, to intercede in the conflict with proposals to mediate.
