Residents protest against construction of Ramnagar-Bagh Lingampally flyover

Residents of the area are opposing the Ramnagar-Bagh Lingampally flyover because they feel that it is a waste of public funds.

On Wednesday, local residents staged a dharna outside the office of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in protest of plans for a flyover in the area.

A flyover on the Ramnagar-Bagh Lingampally stretch would be a waste of public resources, they said, as there is no major traffic congestion here.

Ramnagar-Bagh Lingampally flyover construction has been objected to by residents who have written to the Telangana Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister (MA&UD) KT Rama Rao. A lot of people have threatened to hit the streets if the government moves forward with the plan.

We might recall that the MA&UD Minister laid the foundation for the construction of a two-level, three-lane, bi-directional flyover from Ram Nagar to Bagh Lingampally.

This flyover will be constructed of steel, unlike conventional flyovers. An estimated cost of Rs 76 crore is being spent on the steel flyover. The Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) is undertaking the construction of the flyover.

There have been protests in Ramnagar against the GHMC’s plan for the construction of a steel flyover between Ramnagar and Baghlingampally, claiming that the flyover will not benefit locals or help traffic flow.

There is no traffic problem between Ramnagar and Bagh Lingampally and residents say it is surprising that a flyover is being built in such an area where there isn’t much traffic. The flyover was originally intended to end at the RTC Kalyana Mandapam. Yet the design of the flyover changed abruptly, and now it will end near Dr BR Ambedkar College, which they insist is useless.

N Srinivas, a local resident, had reportedly said that the flyover could cause harm to middle-class and retired workers.
