Rs 6 lakh ex-gratia announced by GHMC for kin of four-year old boy killed in stray dog attack

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 6 lakh to the family of the four-year-old boy who died after being attacked by a pack of street dogs in Amberpet recently.

Aside from that, Rs.2 lakh would be provided to the boy’s family by the Mayor, G. Vijaya Laxmi along with her one month honorarium. The Mayor, who met with three corporators from different political parties, stated that the Deputy Mayor and the corporators present agreed to contribute their one-month honorarium. She said she would make a request to the state government for any necessary assistance for the boy’s family.

The Mayor stated that an all-party committee would be formed to devise strategies to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The civic body was taking every precaution to combat the street dog menace, including the effective implementation of animal birth control, sterilisation, and vaccination.

In addition to the present fleet of 30 vehicles, 20 more vehicles with five outsourced personnel for every vehicle were being deployed, she said. The number of sterilisations would increase from 100 to 450. The Mayor directed the sanitation staff to ensure that there were no delays or neglect in garbage collection.

Meat and chicken shops, hotels, restaurants, function halls, and other establishments are now under the GHMC’s radar, as the corporation will take stringent action against such establishments if waste and leftovers, including non-veg, are discarded on streets and public places. To avoid the gathering of street dogs in search of food, the GHMC will ensure proper disposal practises.

Furthermore, sanitation staff, including outsourcing staff, would be trained to deal with street dogs and follow the appropriate protocol. The instructions include placing billboards/hoardings in appropriate locations highlighting appropriate behaviour towards and around street dogs.
