SC Extends Parole Of Rajiv Gandhi Assassination Convict By One More Week

On Friday, The Supreme Court extended the parole of AG Perarivalan, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, by one more week for medical treatments.

It was clarified by a bench directed by Justice L. Nageswara Rao that this is the final extension of parole for Perarivalan, who has been out since November 9 on medical grounds.

Tamil Nadu will furthermore give police escort to Perarivalan in the hospital.

The bench stated that Perarivalan might be taken to any medical facility that he needs, and requested that his counsel to suggest his client to visit CMC Vellore for the treatment.

The bench said that after one week he shall be taken to jail.

Perarivalan also looked for extension of his parole by ninety days which was then opposed by Tami Nadu government counsel.

The Tamil Nadu government counsel stated 30 days parole is permitted in 2 years and he has already availed 51 days. The counsel added that he has a hospital clinic 25 km away, rather he wants to go to a hospital which is 200 km away and these facts are not shown before the court.

The Supreme Court on November 23 had extended Perarivalan’s parole by one week for a medical check-up. The top court requested the Tamil Nadu government to give police protection to him in the hospital.

Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, representing Perarivalan, had presented before the steady gaze of the top court that parole was provided on November 9, which was then extended by Madras High Court to November 23.

Sankaranarayanan had submitted that he also requested a police escort for medical exams. If the state can grant parole for another week.

The seat stated it will hear the matter on the following date for last disposal and the parole for a week and guided the Tamil Nadu government to give protection to him during the medical check-up.

The order from the top court came following the Central Bureau of Investigation submitted it does not oppose his release of the convict and the Tamil Nadu Governor can settle on it.

On November 3, the Supreme Court communicated its dissatisfaction over the pendency of pardon-plea of a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case for more than two years with the Tamil Nadu Governor.
