SC Questions Solicitor General Over Fake News On Twitter, YouTube

The rise in the spread of fake news has become a matter of concern for everyone. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Thursday expressed their concerns over the matters. They said the continued platforms for spreading fake news would eventually get a bad name for the country.

SC Questions Solicitor General For A Self-Regulatory Mechanism 

As per the latest reports, a bench headed by the Chief Justice N.V Ramana said that the web portals have no control over anybody. Everyone can publish fake news and slander reputations as there is an absence of a regulatory mechanism. They added that if this continues to happen, it would eventually get a bad name for the country.

The bench which also comprised of Justices Surya Kant and A.S Bopanna observed that the content shown in the private media may also have a communal tone. The CJ then questioned Solicitor General Tushar Mehta if he had any attempt for a self-regulatory mechanism for the private channels.

In response to the same, Mehta informed the courts that they have new Information and Technology rules that address the concerns expressed by the court. He said that many petitions have been filed that have challenged the new rules in various high courts. He added that the Centre has requested all the petitions to be transferred to the Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Expresses Concerns Over Accountability of The Private Platforms 

In the statement, the Chief Justice said that the social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook or YouTube don’t share accountability about the institutions that the ill content is being published about. He said that they don’t respond and quote it to be their right.
This comes during the hearing of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind’s petition against fake and motivated news related to the Nizamuddin Markaz incident in Delhi.
