Shweta Opens Up About Being Bullied for Her Height on Film Set

Actress Shweta Basu Prasad, known for her performances in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil, has shared a painful experience of bullying she faced on a film set, revealing that her physical appearance, specifically her height, was the subject of ridicule.

In an emotional recount, Shweta described how, during a Telugu film shoot, she was repeatedly mocked for being shorter than her co-star. The bullying came primarily from the male lead, who stood close to 6 feet tall. “The entire crew would remind me of my height every single day. It became an uncomfortable situation for me on that set,” she confessed.

Shweta went on to explain the irony of the situation, as her male co-star faced his own set of challenges, including frequent retakes and struggles with the Telugu language. Despite being a native Telugu speaker, the male lead was unable to speak the language properly, yet no one criticized him for it. In contrast, Shweta, despite her limited knowledge of the language, was never given the same understanding and support. “It was something that was genetically inherited and yet, I was being judged for it,” she added, noting that her height was entirely out of her control.

While Shweta did not name the film or the co-actor involved, she recalled this as the only instance in her career where she felt truly bullied, describing the experience as deeply hurtful. She pointed out the unfairness of the situation, where her physical attribute was constantly criticized, while her co-actor’s struggles with the language were overlooked. “It was very bad,” she said, reflecting on the emotional toll it took on her.

Shweta Basu Prasad has had a successful career in the Telugu film industry, making her debut in 2008 with Kotha Bangaru Lokam and later starring in notable films like Ride, Kasko, Kalavar King, Priyudu, and Genius. Her most recent Telugu film was Vijeta in 2016. Apart from Telugu cinema, Shweta has also earned acclaim for her work in the Hindi and Tamil film industries.

Her candid revelation sheds light on the challenges many actors face in the industry, particularly concerning body image and appearance-related bullying. It serves as a powerful reminder of the impact such experiences can have on an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. Shweta’s story underscores the importance of creating a more supportive, inclusive, and understanding environment on film sets for everyone involved.

Her bravery in sharing this experience encourages ongoing conversations about the need to combat body shaming and other forms of bullying within the entertainment industry.
