The Tarnaka Junction flyover in Hyderabad will be closed to vehicular traffic starting June 6. This decision comes after a trial reopening that began on April 18, 2025, which aimed to ease movement between Osmania University and Lalapet. However, the temporary reopening led to significant traffic congestion and raised safety concerns, prompting authorities to re-evaluate the flyover’s operational feasibility.
During the trial period, the Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted an in-depth assessment of traffic patterns around the flyover. Their analysis included simulation studies, drone-based surveillance, and feedback collected from daily commuters. The findings clearly indicated that the flyover’s operation resulted in traffic bottlenecks, disrupted traffic flow, and increased the risk of accidents. Based on these results, the authorities determined that closing the junction was necessary to restore smoother movement and ensure road safety for the public.
With the closure in effect, commuters are being advised to plan alternative routes to avoid delays. Officials have urged motorists to allow extra travel time, especially during peak hours, as nearby roads may experience added traffic pressure. Drivers are also encouraged to remain vigilant and follow any updates from the traffic police to minimise inconvenience.

This move is part of a broader traffic management strategy by the Hyderabad Traffic Police to improve road safety and ease congestion in the city’s high-density zones. The closure of the Tarnaka Junction flyover is seen as a step towards enhancing long-term urban mobility and creating safer travel conditions for residents.
