Telangana DPH Srinivasa Rao says face masks can be optional

Dr G Srinivasa Rao, the Telangana State Director of Public Health, believes that while face masks can be optional, measures must be taken because COVID-19 has not gone.

He noted that masks are required in public places, especially during travel, according to the state and centre. However, because the COVID-19 instances in the state are under control, wearing a mask may be unnecessary.

According to th media, Rao stated that for the time being, people should be cautious and avoid huge gatherings. It’s a different storey if the public and regulatory authorities have become complacent, Rao continued.

Rao also said that based on national and international investigations, it appears like COVID-19 is no longer a threat because there are less than 100 cases per day; yet, no one can accurately forecast the change and development of new varieties of any virus. Even if COVID-19 cases increase, they could be caused by a simple infection such as Omicron.

Dr Rao further advised patients to practice Covid Appropriate Behaviour (CAB) and to avoid congested areas such as malls, markets, and gatherings at religious, political, social, and workplaces.

He went on to say that based on current trends, Covid-19 appears to be over. No one, least of all Covid, can predict virus changes and the appearance of new varieties. However, based on patterns, historical trends, and international and national studies, Covid appears to be no longer a hazard, with fewer than 100 cases per day, few hospitalizations, and no deaths. According to the DPH, even if a Covid-19 infection occurs, it could be a simple infection like Omicron.

When asked about recent IIT Kanpur studies that appear to point to an impending fourth wave, he stated, “Mathematical models may not be very apt for diseases, particularly Covid-19, which has behaved very erratically in its spread, evolution, and so on, and differs from country to country and from person to person.” Of course, the models will help us prepare, which we already have.

Dr Srinivasa Rao went on to note that, as a public health professional, he advises wearing masks in crowded public places, avoiding large crowds, and practising hand hygiene.
