Telangana govt asks KRMB to calculate Krishna water consumption by Telugu states

The Telangana government has requested that the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) calculate the consumption of Krishna water by Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the current water year in order to determine the actual water usage by both of them.

While presenting his arguments in front of the three-member committee of the KRMB here on Friday, Telangana Engineer-In-Chief Muralidhar stated that calculating water consumption by both States would enable them to know how much share of water was actually consumed by each of them and how much was left to be consumed.

He went on to say that Andhra Pradesh has already exceeded its quota for Krishna water this year, whereas Telangana still has a chance to use 141 TMC.

Because Andhra Pradesh Engineer-In-Chief Narayana Reddy was unable to attend the meeting, the three-member committee adjourned the meeting. The next meeting was scheduled for the first week of March.

For the past eight years, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been involved in water-sharing disputes. During a series of meetings, Telangana raised the demand for an allocation of Krishna water between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in the ratio of 50:50 per cent.

The board, however, decided to keep the water sharing in the river between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana at the ratio of 66:34. Andhra Pradesh also wanted the ratio to be revised to 70:30 per cent but the board ruled out any revision.

As per the officials, the 66:34 ratio was made just for one year, and Telangana agreed to it with an understanding that the Centre would make fair allocations by referring the matter to the KRMB, but the latter continued the arrangement and refused to consider the demand of 50:50 ratio of Telangana.

“By not considering the demand of the Telangana government, the board is depriving it of the rightful share of the water,” a senior official said.
