Telangana Govt Increases ST Reservations by 4 Percent Effective Immediately

The Telangana government increased the reservation for Scheduled Tribes (ST) in the state’s educational institutes and government services by 4% with immediate effect on Friday. The ST reservation in the state has been extended from 6% to 10%.

As per the latest reports, the government of K Chandrashekar Rao announced the decision on the occasion of Dussehra, taking into account the state’s 10% ST population.

The demand for increased ST reservation was made in a bill passed by the Telangana Legislative Assembly approximately six years ago. This bill was then sent to the central government for approval by the President.

“On the lines of Tamil Nadu legislation, a Bill was unanimously passed by the Telangana State Legislature on 16-04-2017 to increase the reservation of Scheduled Tribes up to 10% in educational institutions and State Government services. The Bill has been sent to the Government of India for the President’s assent in 2017.”

“During these close to six years, the State Government sent several representations in this regard, but the same is still pending. Therefore, in these circumstances, it is expedient to enhance the percentage of Scheduled Tribe reservations, without any further loss of time,” a state government official order stated.

As the Centre reportedly ignored the State government’s and tribals’ pleas, Chief Minister KCR recently announced his decision that the TRS government will implement enhanced reservations to ensure tribal justice, and the orders were issued on Friday evening.

Sources have said that in 1994, the total reservations in Tamil Nadu surpassed the 50% mark and increased to 69%. However, it has repeatedly ignored Telangana’s requests. According to sources, the Centre has also provided constitutional sanctity by including these increased reservations of Tamil Nadu in Schedule 9 of the Indian Constitution.
