Telangana govt working for welfare of weavers, says CM KCR

On National Handloom Day, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao congratulated the handloom workers and announced that the state government has launched the ‘Nethanna ku Bima’ scheme.

The scheme will benefit about 80,000 weaver families. In case of death, the beneficiaries will receive Rs 5 lakh as insurance coverage, which will be given to their bereaved families.

According to the CM, the government is successfully implementing weavers’ welfare and development schemes. It was a first-of-its-kind scheme in the country, providing financial security to weavers and their families.

While the Telangana government was working to develop and benefit weavers, the Central government was not supporting the initiative and instead was increasing taxes on handlooms and powerlooms.

In spite of the hardships, the State government will continue to support the handloom sector and the weavers who rely on it.

CM KCR lashed out at the Centre, saying, rather than supporting the State Government, which is trying to take care of the weavers, the Union Government is wrecking their handloom and power loom industries with tax increases.

Under the scheme, the state government has teamed up with the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India for the ‘Nethanna Beema’ scheme and designated the state department of handlooms and textiles as the nodal agency. LIC implements the scheme, with the government paying the insurance company’s annual premiums on behalf of the beneficiaries.

Approximately 1 lakh direct and indirect weavers work in the handloom and textile industry in Telangana, Ramana said. Upon death, the government will pay 5 lakh rupees to their nominees. Weavers are being given life insurance for the first time.

On August 7, the country recognizes the contributions of its handloom weavers by celebrating National Handloom Day.

The handloom weaving community is honored on this day, highlighting its contribution to the country’s socioeconomic development.
