With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall across Telangana over the next two days, the Directorate of Public Health and Family Welfare has issued a health advisory urging citizens to take preventive measures against seasonal illnesses.
Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health, stated that the sudden drop in temperatures and increased humidity due to rains could lead to a rise in vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. In addition, waterborne infections like acute gastroenteritis, jaundice, and typhoid are also expected to increase during this period.
To minimize the risk of mosquito-borne diseases, citizens are advised to secure windows and doors with mosquito nets or screens, use bed nets for children and infants, apply mosquito repellents, and regularly clean domestic drains to avoid water stagnation. Septic tanks should be covered with mesh to prevent mosquito breeding. People are also encouraged to observe a ‘Friday Dry Day’ every week to eliminate stagnant water around their homes.

The advisory further recommends drinking only boiled or filtered water and washing hands thoroughly before and after meals. The public is urged to avoid stale or unhygienic food from outside vendors and refrain from handshakes, especially when unwell. Regular use of hand sanitizers and covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing have also been emphasized.
If individuals experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, headache, or body pain, they are advised to seek medical care at the nearest government health facility. In case of emergencies, citizens can contact the 108 ambulance service for immediate assistance.
