Telangana: Pregnant women encouraged to have normal deliveries under new govt initiative

The Telangana government asked doctors, nurses, and field staff, including Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), to encourage pregnant women to opt for normal deliveries as part of efforts to promote normal deliveries rather than caesarean sections in government hospitals.

The state government has declared war on the practice of performing unnecessary caesarean sections at the expense of normal deliveries at government and private hospitals.

“There at an area hospital in Golconda, we are promoting normal deliveries as per the government rule,” said Dr. Lakshmi, a gynaecologist. “We have at least eight normal deliveries, and they are given KCR kits after the delivery. Patients are in good health and are discharged on the second day,” Lakshmi added.

The state government announced the KCR Kit scheme in its 2017-18 budget for pregnant women and newborn babies.

According to the state government, women who give birth in a government hospital can use this scheme for up to two deliveries.

This scheme’s main goal is to provide all necessary items for pregnant women and their newborn babies.

Pregnant women will receive Rs 12,000 in financial assistance over three phases under this scheme. The government will provide an additional Rs 1000 in the case of a baby girl.

Baby oil, soaps for mother and child, a mosquito net, dresses, handbags, toys for children, diapers, powder, shampoo, sarees, towels and napkins, and a baby bed are all included in the KCR Kit.

“Every day we see pregnant women and we ask them to go for normal deliveries and wait until the last minute for normal delivery,” said Dr. Soujanya, Deputy Civil Surgeon, Gynecologist.

Tirumalama, a patient, stated that she had a normal delivery at the area hospital.

All of the doctors have taken good care of her. There was no issue at all, and tablets were also provided, she said. The child is also healthy, she added.

She also expressed gratitude to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
