Telangana readies itself to combat monkeypox

In response to an increase in monkeypox cases globally, Telangana’s health department is taking steps to prepare in case individuals test positive for this self-limiting illness.

Despite the fact that monkeypox has not been reported in the State so far, senior health officials here said it was better to be prepared due to the global spread of the disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), monkeypox cases have been reported in 50 countries since January.

A training and orientation program for healthcare workers, including paramedics, nurses, doctors, and disease surveillance teams, is being developed by the State’s Health Department as part of its preparation to handle monkeypox.

A variety of disease surveillance measures will be taught to them, including identifying signs and symptoms, screening at entry points in airports, diagnosis, treatment, contact tracing, and other measures.

Training and strengthening preparedness guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) will also be followed. In order to manage monkeypox cases, patients must be isolated until treatment has been completed, and authorities are in the process of identifying such centers. There are also plans to frame therapies and monitoring protocols for patients.

Specific government hospitals will be identified, just as Gandhi Hospital was identified for Covid-19 infections so that patients can receive immediate assistance.

All suspect cases will be screened and tested at entry points and even within the community.

India’s first case of monkeypox

On Thursday, India reported its first case of monkeypox in Kollam, Kerala. The man came back from the UAE four days ago and was hospitalized after showing symptoms of the virus.

The monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus, which is part of the Poxviridae family. It begins in wild animals and then spreads to humans. When people come into close physical contact with an infected animal, especially one that is sick or dead, the virus spreads.
