Telangana: Telugu mandatory for class 1 to 10 of CBSE, ICSE, IB schools

Telugu has been mandated as the second language by the state government for students in CBSE, ICSE, IB and other board-affiliated schools from Class 1 to 10 as of this academic year.

A circular to this effect was not long ago released by the School Education Department, as part of the state government’s phased implementation of the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018 starting in 2018-19.

According to the Act, Telugu is compulsory from Class I to X irrespective of the Board with which schools are affiliated.

The Telangana State Govt stated that any violation of the rules implementing Telugu as a compulsory subject from class I-X from the academic year 2022-23 will be viewed seriously and necessary action will be taken as per the Act and guidelines given by the State Govt.

Two Telugu textbooks have been developed, one for Telugu-speaking students and one for students whose mother tongue is not Telugu.

The state government also warned that non-compliance with the rule would result in serious repercussions for the schools.

It was at the 2017 World Telugu Conference that K. Chandrashekhar Rao came up with the idea of making Telugu a compulsory language for all students in Telangana, no matter what their school affiliation is.

Therefore, the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018 was introduced to introduce Telugu in a phased manner from 2018 to 19 in order to preserve and protect the Telugu language and literature.

As the United Teachers Federation (UTF) Secretary, C. Ravi said, there was no problem with Telugu in the government schools as students studying Telugu, English and Urdu mediums in the government sector already study Telugu as a language.

In fact, schools affiliated with different boards were requested to follow the textbooks developed by SCERT and to appoint teachers to teach Telugu.
