US Democrats formally nominate Joe Biden for president

New York: The ongoing US Democratic National Convention has voted to officially nominate Joe Biden as the party’s presidential candidate, Xinhua reported.

Biden on Tuesday was nominated in a virtual roll call at the Democratic National Convention that followed nominating speeches by US Senator Chris Coons and US Representative Lisa Blunt Rochester, both Democrats from Biden’s home state of Delaware, a US media outlet reported.

“Joe has tackled gun violence and climate change,” Coons said.

“He stood up to dictators and supported our troops. He led the recovery effort after the last recession and delivered on a promise to make our health care system fairer and stronger.”

Earlier on July 12, 2020, Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has won the primary in the state of Louisiana, a media report said.

The former Vice President won with 82.2 percent of the vote, leading Senator Bernie Sanders, who received 5.3 percent, with 1 percent of precincts reporting, The Hill news website quoted the New York Times as saying on Saturday.

The Louisiana primaries were delayed twice from their original April 4 date, first to June 20 and finally to Saturday, in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Louisiana will award 54 pledged delegates.

The state is not likely to be competitive in 2020, with President Donald Trump beating Hillary Clinton by about 20 points in 2016.
