Violations of traffic laws to be strictly dealt with by Hyderabad police

The Hyderabad police department formulated an action plan on Thursday to strictly crack down on traffic violators while also improving vehicle flow in the city, following a concerning 18% increase in the number of vehicles in 2022.

CV Anand, the city police chief, gave a PowerPoint presentation to the media, informing them about a series of traffic management measures to be implemented under the ‘3 Golden Es’ of enforcement, education, and engineering, as well as the ongoing operation ROPE (Removal of obstructive parking and encroachments). CV Anand also unveiled the new traffic wing logo.

According to a press release, the department will take strict measures against commuters who drive on the wrong side of the road, triple ride, improper number plates, black film on windows, etc.

According to police, a sharp increase in individual vehicles has been the primary cause of increased congestion on city roads since the Covid-19 outbreak. “When compared to 2019, the number of vehicles on the road increased by nearly 18% in 2022, with approximately 77,65,487 vehicles on the road.  The number of traffic complaints reported to the Dial 100 helpline has also increased,” they added.

According to CP Anand, more towing cranes will be deployed to keep the carriageway clear. “The quality of enforcement will be prioritized, and the impact on compliance with traffic rules will be studied. All senior officers will focus on regulation during peak hours,” he said.

The police will also hold regular meetings with businesses, hawkers, schools, colleges, auto drivers, RTC drivers, and all stakeholders to educate them on traffic laws and parking regulations. Following the completion of education campaigns, special enforcement drives will be launched to keep a tab on errant violators.

To address the issue of a lack of parking spaces in congested areas, CV Anand stated that 30% of the total built-up area should be allocated to residential apartments and educational institutions, 40% to hotels, lodges, and commercial buildings, and 60% to malls and multiplexes.

He also discussed junction development, the installation of signage boards at free lefts, the provision of a safe turning radius at U-turns, and the use of reversible lanes based on traffic flow, all of which will be studied and implemented in the city.

Police said that measures to revitalize bus bays, relocate bus stops, and improve road signage and marking will be implemented soon.

The traffic wing’s social media unit will expand digital education campaigns to reach out to younger citizens through awareness videos and sessions.

The police will cater to the welfare needs of traffic personnel through regular health camps, kit bags, and continuous capacity building at the Traffic Training Institute under the 4th ‘E’, Enablement.

The traffic wing has been strengthened further with the allocation of 40 SIs and Inspectors from the 2010 batch. According to the traffic police, approximately 100 home guards and 100 female personnel from CAR will be deployed for traffic duties to cover more junctions.
