With heaps of sanitary issues, Jalpally face shortage of sanitation staff

For a gigantic Jalpally municipality with over one lakh population on the city outskirts, the Achilles heel is the dearth of sanitary staff as only 72 sanitary workers are available to address scores of complaints pouring in every day from all the 28 wards with colossal population.

With no facility like dumping yard to store garbage being collected from all the 28 wards, Jalpally municipality nestles around Badangpet, Shamshabad and Tukkuguda municipalities that considered more organised, privileged and independent in terms of facilities like dumping yard, compost making units and well orderly door-to-door trash collection system.

Together these wards, according to officials, generate nearly 32 tonnes of garbage every day while total strength of sanitary staff accounts for only 72 as against the flexible number of 280 members. Though the municipality has nearly 28 swachh autos, a gulfer, 2 three wheelers, 4 tractors and a JCB machine under its fleet, the shortage of sanitary staff makes it hard to address the day to day complaints regarding carting away of trash from localities.

“Generally 28 members are needed for every 10,000 population to carry out day to day sanitary drives. This would translate into a requirement of 280 members for over one lakh population in Jalpally. However, with mere 72 members of sanitary staff available with the municipality, we can’t able to maintain day to day sanitation drives in all the areas at a time,” informed an official on the condition of anonymity.

Geographically the municipality spreads over a 30 square kilometres of area with a population of 80,374 (as per the 2011 census) which has now crossed to over one lakh. The municipality is presently an abode for almost 23,961 families. With a trash generation of 32 tonnes every day, this municipality has no suitable place as a dumping yard to collect the garbage and this issue causes trouble for the sanitary wing of the municipality every day.

This makes sanitation a major issue among all in the most impoverished municipality on the city outskirts despite the efforts the Commissioner put in to address the stinking issue of sanitation.

Explaining the measures to improve sanitary situation in the municipality, another senior official said that “We have ratcheted up measures to improve sanitation system in the municipality through augmenting the fleet of vehicles and will increase the number of sanitation staff too to cover all the areas soon. Besides, we are also conducting awareness programs to educate people regarding the importance of disposing off the trash meticulously.”
