Youth Abused and Beaten in Court for Inter-Faith Marriage

Aligarh: In yet another aftermath of the new anti-conversion law, a Muslim youth was allegedly beaten and abused within the court premises in Aligarh where he had accompanied a girl, to get legally married.

The incident occurred on Thursday and video recordings of the occurrence have circulated around the web on social media.

In the video, the 21-year-old youth is seen being forcibly taken away by several police officers in an e-rickshaw.

In the other video, the girl is additionally seen being taken away by female constables as she yells that she is an adult and wishes to live with the youth.

The girl, who belongs to another faith, had arrived from Chandigarh for the marriage while the youth, Sonu Malik, who is a local resident. Malik is employed in Ambala in Haryana.

The couple was taken to the Civil Line police headquarters Aligarh however no FIR had been filed till late Thursday.

Circle official (CO) Anil Samaniya stated, “The matter is under investigation.”

The occurrence comes days after the new anti-conversion law became imposed and the initial arrest was made late Wednesday for another case in Bareilly.

In the meantime, the Uttar Pradesh government is intending to withdraw a scheme that has provided benefits to interfaith marriage for 44 years.

The Intercaste and Interfaith Marriage Incentive Scheme was brought into force in 1976 by the national integration division of the then Uttar Pradesh government.

Many years after the fact when Uttarakhand was cut out of UP, the incentive scheme was retained. Presently, even Uttarakhand is considering the withdrawal of the plan.

To profit the benefits under this scheme, an interfaith couple would have needed to apply to the district magistrate within two years of the wedding and after confirmation, the couple is given an amount of money.

Nonetheless, in 2017, the UP government brought out a rule that in the event that the interfaith couple converted after they got married, they would then lose the incentive.

In the previous year, there were 11 beneficiaries from the scene who got Rs 50,000 each, the Times of India uncovered in a report. However, there have been no cases in 2020 and four applications that came in are as of yet pending.
