YS Sharmila gets bail after being arrested over protest march in Hyderabad

Following her arrest by the police on November 29 for marching towards Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s official residence here to protest the alleged attack on her convoy by the ruling TRS cadre during her ongoing padayatra, YSR Telangana Party founder Y S Sharmila was granted bail by a city court.

During the march, she was seen getting into a damaged vehicle and driving it before being stopped by police, according to TV footage.

When she refused to get out, the police arrived with a crane and towed the vehicle away while she was still inside.

Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan expressed outrage at Sharmila’s arrest and expressed concern for her safety and health, according to a Raj Bhavan release on Tuesday night.

The governor was quoted in it as saying that seeing Sharmila’s car being towed away while she was inside was ‘disturbing.’

Tamilisai stated that regardless of political background or ideology, women leaders and cadres must be treated with more dignity and respect, the release said.

Condemning the alleged attack during Sharmila’s state-wide padayatra called ‘Praja Prasthanam’ in Warangal district on Monday, the YSRT party chief and her supporters marched to Rao’s camp office to lay siege to it but were stopped by police along the way.

Sharmila was later arrested and taken to a police station, where a case was filed against them.

Sharmila was accused by police of driving recklessly and negligently, ‘abusing’ cops and deterring them from performing their duties.

Anil, Sharmila’s husband, stated that the case filed against his wife was “very very unfair.”

“We are not criminals…we are peace lovers…She (Sharmila) is a fighter,” he said.

Sharmila’s mother, Y S Vijayamma, said people and God would respond appropriately to the TRS government’s attitude.

The protest march came a day after Sharmila’s padayatra caravan was allegedly attacked and set on fire by TRS activists.

Sharmila was stopped in Warangal and escorted back to Hyderabad due to the law and order situation.

Protesting Sharmila’s comments against the TRS MLA from Narsampet, ruling party activists gathered in large numbers, and police dispersed both TRS and YSR Telangana Party workers to prevent a law and order situation.

Sharmila, daughter of late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, former chief minister of united Andhra Pradesh, and sister of current AP Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, undertook the foot march, which has spread across 75 Assembly segments in Telangana, the party said.
