The Andhra Pradesh Police have arrested Pinipe Srikanth, the son of YSR Congress Party leader and former Minister Pinipe Viswarup, in connection with the murder of a Dalit youth two years ago. Srikanth was apprehended in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and is being transported back to the state on a transit warrant.
The murder of J. Durga Prasad, a Dalit youth and village volunteer, occurred in June 2022, following riots in the Dr B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. Srikanth is one of the accused in the case.
Police had been actively searching for Srikanth for several days and managed to apprehend him in Madurai. He was produced before a local court to obtain a transit warrant and is being transported to Konaseema district by road. Srikanth has denied the allegations against him, claiming he is a doctor and not involved in violence.

The motive behind the Dalit youth’s murder remains unclear, but police believe it was a well-planned conspiracy. According to investigations, the victim was taken to Kotipalli dock by a YSRCP social media convenor, V. Dharmesh, who was also arrested earlier this month. The victim was then allegedly strangled to death by four men who followed them in a car.
The YSRCP leader’s house in Amalapuram was set on fire during the violence that erupted over the renaming of Konaseema district in May 2022, though the family was not present at the time.
The arrest of Pinipe Srikanth has sent shockwaves through the state, as it involves the son of a prominent political figure. The case is expected to have significant political implications and will be closely followed by the public and media.
