Neglected IDL Lake in Kukatpally: Rising Concerns Over Health Risks and Environmental Degradation

Residents of Kukatpally have voiced deep concern over the prolonged neglect of the IDL lake by the Telangana government. Despite the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) developing a park nearby, locals emphasize that the state of the lake itself remains dire.

Once a picturesque spot, the IDL lake has now become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and snakes, covered with an extensive mat of water hyacinth. This deterioration has not only marred its beauty but also posed serious health risks, with diseases like Dengue and Malaria on the rise among residents. Moreover, sewage discharge has polluted the water, compounding the environmental degradation.

Sushant, a resident, highlighted the unpleasant odor emanating from linked drainage pipelines, which exacerbates the already compromised conditions. “The lake has turned into a mosquito and snake-infested area,” he lamented, urging immediate action from the HMDA and Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

Residents recalled the government’s earlier commitment of Rs 9.8 crore for lake restoration and beautification. “We had hope when proposals for clearing water hyacinth, implementing wetland treatments, and upgrading bunds were discussed,” they said. However, these plans stalled after initial stages, leaving the lake in neglect.

Ramesh, another local resident, pointed out the stalled sewage pipeline project, which has been abandoned for six months due to infrastructure issues. “It’s disappointing that despite repeated complaints, the authorities have not taken concrete steps to improve the situation,” he added.

Residents, like Sneha, expressed skepticism over the government’s promises, noting the lack of progress despite ongoing grievances. “The authorities’ silence is worrying,” she said. Efforts to reach HMDA and GHMC officials for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
