Around 11 married women from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district reportedly absconded with their lovers after receiving funds from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This government scheme aims to assist poor and lower middle-class families in building permanent houses.
According to reports, these women took the first instalment of Rs 40,000 under PMAY and left their husbands to elope with their lovers. The husbands have filed FIRs regarding the incidents.
Recently, approximately 2,350 recipients in Maharajganj district received PMAY funds, distributed across villages including Thuthibari, Sheetlapur, Chatia, Ramnagar, Bakul Diha, Khasra, Kishunpur, and Medhauli.

In response to these events, officials have decided to withhold the second instalment of funds for the beneficiaries.
Under PMAY, the government provides subsidies up to Rs 2.5 lakh to eligible families based on their income levels. However, authorities retain the right to reclaim funds if issues arise post-disbursement.
This incident is not unprecedented in Uttar Pradesh, where similar cases of women fleeing with lovers after receiving PMAY funds have occurred. Last year alone, four such incidents were reported after recipients received Rs 50,000 under the scheme.
