17 of 49 jails remain shut as reformed prisoners walk out honorably

HyderabadOf all the States in the country, the Prisons Department of Telangana State was in a better place by undertaking revolutionary reformation and rehabilitation programs and brought about change in some 1,000 prisoners, Prisons’ Director-General V. K. Singh said.

Addressing the media here on Friday, VK Singh said while there were 49 jails in the State, 17 prisons remained shut as there were no prisoners. He said the closed prisons would be used as social service or special homes for beggars, orphans, destitutes and so on. The department would also set up a separate housing board to construct affordable 2BHK apartments.

K. Singh said they have sent a proposal in this regard to the State government for extension of Anand Ashram to other districts, he said. The department has chalked out plans to open 20 new petrol pumps, including one operated exclusively by transgender persons, in the State. These 20 petrol pumps were in addition to the existing 18 petrol pumps, he added. (NSS)
