74% citizens support one month lockdown in cities with high virus load

New Delhi: Majority of the Indian citizens are supporting a one-month complete lockdown in areas where high number of cases are being reported, according to a survey by LocalCircles. People suggested this to cease the further spread of the virus in India.

This survey was conducted in 14 of the high virus load districts in the country whose residents favored a one month lockdown.

The average cases of covid-19 has increased to about 11,000 per day in India and the current health departments aren’t able to cope with the same because of the lack of infrastructure to serve these patients. As such, people were questioned if they felt a complete one month lockdown to be helpful to contain the virus in the top 15 high virus load districts which presently account for 64 per cent of the cases in India. 74 per cent of the respondents answered in a yes and 22 per cent disagreed with the idea of a lockdown implementation.

This proves that most of the citizens believe a one-month complete lockdown in the 15 high virus load districts is required to stop the Covid-19 spread in India. While people continue to be fully supportive of getting economic activity going in green and orange zones, the view for high virus load districts is clearly different and that of imposing restrictions.

According to the people, the only allowed commercial goods for delivery should include the essential items. Functioning of non-essential factories and opening of offices should not be allowed in high virus load districts in India.

In mid-may, the citizens encouraged relaxations in high virus load districts but after witnessing the rapid increase in cases and poor infrastructure and other health services has drove them to change their opinions.

Districts with the highest number of cases issued by Niti Aayog include Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Thane, Pune, Indore, Kolkata, Jaipur, Surat, Hyderabad, Aurangabad, Jodhpur, Gurugram and Chengalpattu.

Looking at the current situation, LocalCircles asked people for their views on imposing a lockdown again. The percentage of citizens that responded with a yes were Delhi (79 per cent), Mumbai (64 per cent), Chennai (61 per cent), Ahmedabad (73 per cent), Thane (50 per cent), Pune (60 per cent), Indore (67 per cent), Kolkata (52 per cent), Gurugram (59 per cent), Jaipur (53 per cent), Surat (57 per cent), Aurangabad (80 per cent) and Jodhpur (75 per cent).

This brings light on the fact that people too believe a strict lockdown to be the solution for the growing number of infections in the country.

They were asked for their views and the approaches which they believed would help the country. In response, 23 per cent said that there should be a complete lockdown while 59 per cent said there should be a partial lockdown where all public places are shut. Fourteen per cent said there should be no lockdown at all in these districts.

As the number of tests being conducted is still low in the country, cases of hundreds of infected patients are getting reported from Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai. People are struggling to get tested in these places along with receiving their results faster, getting admission in a hospital and securing an ICU bed. Mumbai and Delhi have also complained of shortage of healthcare professionals, broken processes to access beds and hiked prices in private hospital for treatments.
