Bhopal: In an inhuman action in Madhya Pradesh, an elderly man was tied to the bed in a hospital as his family allegedly couldn’t pay the bills of the treatment. Although, the hospital claimed that the man was suffering from seizures and tied to prevent him from hurting himself.
The shocking incident took place in Bhopal, where the 80 year old man’s family members complained of his hands and legs being tied as they weren’t able to pay the remaining balance of Rs. 11,000 to the hospital administration.
According to the elderly patient’s daughter, they had paid Rs. 5,000 to the hospital when he got admitted but at the end of the treatment, they were in financial crisis and couldn’t pay the rest.
“We had deposited a bill of Rs 5,000 at the time of admission but when the treatment took a few more days, we did not have the money to pay the bill,” she said.
The incident has attracted the attention of the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister who assured strict action and probe into the matter. He tweeted saying, “A treatment meted to a senior citizen in a hospital in Shajapur has come to notice. The culprits will not be spared, strict action will be taken.”

The ANI reported District Collector of Shajapur Dinesh Jain saying, “”We have sent a team of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and a doctor, to the hospital to investigate the matter. This should not have happened and we will ensure that appropriate action is taken against the hospital.”
Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath also took to Twitter to raise voice against the barbaric incident, “Such inhuman, barbaric treatment of an elderly person in a hospital in Shajapur. The father was held hostage by the arms and legs with ropes for not paying the hospital bill.”
However, the hospital stood on the ground that due to the electrolyte imbalance in his body, the elderly man was having convulsions, because of which, his hands and legs were tied to the hospital bed and not due to the non-payment of bills.
“He was having convulsions because of electrolyte imbalance. We tied him so that he could not hurt himself,” said a doctor at the hospital.
They also said that they had waived off the hospital bills on account of humanitarian actions.
