Hyderabad : Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy director V K Singh today observed that the police police training academies across the country were turning into mere dumping yards and needed to bring about attitudinal change among those undergoing training at the academy.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Thursday, Singh said the police officers, who were supposed to function like social workers, were being friendly with rich and powerful people. Though the police were not answerable to the government, but to the law and justice, they are not of any use to the common man. Though the police personnel were laying down their lives in discharge of their duties, there was no recognition from the people due to the British era rules and the trainees passing out of the academies were not able to bring name to the Police department.
V K Singh, who served in the Jails department earlier, said 90% of police men posted in prisons were helping affluent prisoners and leaving 90% of poor convicts. He also pointed out that some of the prisoners do not know why they were arrested and sent to jail. Calling upon the police personnel to mend their pro-rich attitude and perform their duties sincerely, Singh exuded confidence that he could bring about changes in the police training course. He also said the police were not in sync with prevailing ground realities. A police officer should be a social worker. Friendly policing is real policing and police officers are like Lord Shiva, the protector, he added.
An IPS officer of 1987 batch, presently V K Singh working in the post of Additional Director General of Police and his elevation to DGP rank was pending since two years. He had worked as SP in several districts in the united AP State. He has two more years of service. His latest comments on police functioning caused sensation in the police circles. (NSS)
