A New “Selfie with Seat Belt” Campaign to Promote Responsible Driving Took Social Media by Storm

The campaign invites people to take cool selfies while wearing seat belts (but obviously not while driving!). Participants stand a chance to win Daily prizes – all they need to do to enter is to buckle up.

“Buckle up, take a cool selfie and post the picture on social media with the hashtag “Selfie with Seat Belt” Challenge to stand a chance to win,” said National General Secretary, Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) Shaik Salauddin. “The prizes include a Petrol and Diesel voucher and Car Accessories.”

The challenge was meant to be fun and a quick way to raise awareness by reaching large masses in a short space of time, said Shaik Salauddin. He is the founder of the Clean-Up Squad’s Safety Belt Campaign.

The campaign is a different and fun way to encourage the motorists to buckle up, he said. “The selfie challenge is meant to be fun and everyone from all ages and all walks of life is welcome to participate. “Videos are welcome too,” he said. “We hope that with this challenge motorists will have a new attitude when they are in their vehicles and will drive with caution”.

Indians are infamous for driving negligently, texting while operating their vehicles, and driving under the influence of alcohol Shaik Salauddin said. The campaign was a way to inspire motorists to be vigilant, drive responsibly by adhering to road rules and avoid drinking and driving during the festive season, he said.

Shaik Salauddin has launched this campaign in the year 2021 and he would like to make sure the initiative reaches the masses on social media to create awareness of road fatalities. “As a young person, I was disturbed by the statistics of young people dying every year due to road accidents and negligent driving, so we jumped at the opportunity to do something which is cool and socially responsible. We can only hope the message reaches to the people and saves lives.”

“All drivers and passengers must wear a seatbelt or appropriate restraint (including children, elderly and pregnant women). Drivers must ensure all passengers are properly restrained. Seat belts must be securely fastened and properly adjusted and there must be only one person for each seating position and seatbelt” Shaik Salauddin said.

Motorists and their passengers are encouraged to upload on to social media platforms pictures and videos of themselves buckled-up, in the campaign which started last week.

Wearing your seat belt reduces the chance of major injury or death by 60 percent and in 2016, 75 percent of people killed on the road were not wearing seat belts, according to Survey from the National Safety Council. Shaik Salauddin informed that “We have done a good job with our earlier programs. Data shows that the rate at which drivers used their seat belts in 2019 was at an all-time high of 89 percent.”
