Aasara pension a great initiative by the Telangana Government

The Telangana government launched the Aasara Pension in November 2014 with the novel goal of ensuring that the poor live with dignity and financial security, and this year 10 lakh additional pensions are being added to the scheme’s existing 35 lakh pensions.

Beneficiaries received a monthly pension of Rs 200 prior to the formation of the State. The Telangana government has increased the monthly pension for differently abled people to Rs 3,016 and for others to Rs 2,016. Monthly pensions will be extended to 6,906 dialysis patients beginning this year.

The State Government spends over Rs 12,000 crore per year on scheme implementation.

Previously, the age limit for receiving pensions under the scheme was 65. The State Government has reduced the eligibility age to 57 years, bringing the total number of pensioners under the scheme to 45.80 lakh.

Telangana may be the only state that provides Aasara pensions to the elderly, differently-abled, widows, single women, HIV-infected, filaria-infected (Grade 2-3), handloom weavers, toddy tappers, and Beedi workers.

No other state in the country provides pensions in such large amounts to people from all walks of life. Furthermore, in order to ensure transparency and eliminate the role of middlemen, the pension is deposited directly into the beneficiaries bank accounts. According to a press release, this practice is only popular in Telangana.

Following the reduction in the age of eligibility for pensions from 65 to 57 years, the State Government was spending an additional Rs 3,000 crore annually on scheme implementation.

In accordance with the age limit reduction, the State Government has increased the monthly allocation of funds to Rs 975 crore.

Aasara pension is a Telangana government pension scheme. It is a welfare scheme that provides pensions to the elderly, widows, Goud community, elephantiasis patients, AIDS patients, physically disabled people, and beedi workers.
