Activist Gaddar’s Passing Leaves Legacy of Change

Gaddar, a well-known figure noted for his activities as a poet, revolutionary balladeer, activist, and former Naxalite, died on Sunday at Apollo Hospitals. His legacy included his participation in different social and political causes.

Gaddar was an active member of the Naxalite movement until 2010, when he switched his attention to the Telangana statehood struggle. He went underground in the 1980s and joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist). He was key in establishing the Jana Natya Mandali, the Communist Party’s cultural branch, which aspired to use art and theater to raise social and political awareness.

Gaddar survived an assassination attempt in 1997, during which he was shot by unidentified gunmen. He was injured, and a bullet became lodged in his spinal cord. Despite the attack, he remained a vocal supporter of social justice and reform.

Condolences flowed in from political leaders across the ideological spectrum upon learning of Gaddar’s death. His body was put in LB Stadium to allow people to pay their respects in acknowledgment of his effect on society and culture.

Gaddar’s funeral was held with state honors at his family’s Mahaboodhi Vidyalaya in Bhudevinagar, Alwal. His contributions to writing, activism, and social movements will live on throughout the region and beyond.
