Addressing Teacher Absenteeism in Hyderabad Government Schools

The education department in Hyderabad has taken a firm stand on the issue of teacher absenteeism in government institutions. In response, headmasters across the state have been instructed to disclose information on about 5,000 absent Teachers. To manage attendance and leave records, an online platform has been developed.

Despite comprehensive records, there is a disturbing tendency of instructors being absent from their assigned schools for extended periods of time. As a result, pupils suffer from a disturbed education and learning experience, while missing teachers continue to get paid.

The issue affects approximately 1.05 lakh instructors who work in 26,000 government schools. According to School Education Directorate officials, around 5,000 teachers have not returned their work, including those on leave and those who remain absent even after their leave periods have ended.

The Directorate of School Education has implemented stringent efforts to address this issue. New orders require online entry of absent teacher information on a designated website. The platform requires headmasters to provide a year’s worth of absence data.

While some absenteeism can be ascribed to instructors relocating abroad or taking extended family leave, claims of teachers improperly extending their leave or working part-time in private universities have surfaced. Some supposedly recruit substitute teachers to teach classes.
