Respirer Reports recently completed an investigation that revealed concerning trends in air pollution levels in various major cities across India, with a special focus on Hyderabad.
The research focused on the concentration of PM 2.5 particles, which are well-known contributors to air pollution and its related health risks. The study period lasted from 2019 until 2023.
The findings for Hyderabad are particularly troubling. When data from 2019 and 2020 were compared, the results revealed a significant 59 percent increase in PM 2.5 concentration. While there was a 2.9 percent decrease in 2021, the situation worsened in 2023, with PM 2.5 levels increasing by 18.6 percent.
This research looked at cities like as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Patna. Among these cities, Hyderabad, along with Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata, had higher PM 2.5 levels in October 2023 than the previous year.
However, Chennai was the least polluted city, with a considerable decline in PM 2.5 levels of more than 23% compared to the previous year. This decrease in pollution levels is a positive trend for Chennai residents, highlighting the success of local efforts to reduce air pollution.
Notably, since 2021, Delhi has seen a continuous rise in PM 2.5 levels. It appeared as the most polluted of the eight cities included in the research in October 2023, indicating an urgent need for comprehensive air quality improvement initiatives in the national capital.
The alarming rise in PM 2.5 levels in Hyderabad and other large cities highlights the importance of strong environmental legislation and collaborative efforts to reduce air pollution, which poses serious health concerns and environmental issues.
