The Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to clean the premises of Jama Masjid in Sambhal but refused to pass an order allowing whitewashing of the mosque.
Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal issued the directive while hearing an application filed by the Committee of Management, Jama Masjid, seeking permission for whitewashing and cleaning of the mosque ahead of the holy month of Ramzan.
On Thursday, the court had ordered the ASI to immediately inspect the site and appoint a three-member team to assess the condition of the mosque. The ASI team submitted its report by 10 a.m. on Friday, stating that the interior of the mosque was covered with ceramic paint and did not require whitewashing at the moment.

During the hearing, senior advocate S.F.A. Naqvi, representing the mosque committee, argued that they only wished to carry out whitewashing and lighting work. However, the court instead instructed the ASI to clean the mosque premises, remove dust, and clear the grass in the area.
Naqvi assured the court that no disruptions would occur during the cleaning process. Meanwhile, the advocate general of the state confirmed that law and order would be maintained throughout the process.
The decision comes ahead of Ramzan, a period of religious significance for the Muslim community, during which mosques are traditionally cleaned and maintained for worshippers.
